Controls and Building Automation Engineer

Remote or Hybrid (Honolulu, Hawaii)Full-Time$100,000 – $140,000 / Annual

Overview

  • MC3 Technologies is a Hawaii-born defense technology and integration company serving defense, federal, and commercial clients across the Pacific and beyond.
  • We bring cybersecurity, physical security, systems integration, software, and facility delivery together under one roof, so the systems our customers depend on are designed, built, and accredited right the first time.
  • Wherever we work, we grow local talent and invest in our people as much as in our technology.
  • How we move: MC3 is an agile, fast-growing company with small teams that have real ownership, decisions made close to the work, and modern tools, including AI, built into how we deliver.
  • If you want your work to matter quickly and to grow with a company that is still being built, this is the place.
  • Engineering at MC3: our engineers design, review, and support delivery on fast-moving facility and infrastructure projects, working side by side with builders and our cyber and software teams so systems get built and accredited without rework.

The Opportunity

  • The Controls Engineer designs, reviews, and serves as project engineer for building automation, utility monitoring, and SCADA, where design and FRCS cybersecurity meet most often.
  • Location: Remote or hybrid from Honolulu, with travel to project sites as needed
  • Type: Full-time or part-time (W-2)
  • Reports to: Principal and CTO (interim), working with MC3's design lead
  • Clearance: Clearable to Secret or higher

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs and design packages in support of the designer of record on prototype and design-build projects, and review designs by others
  • Serve as project engineer: prepare submittals and shop drawings, manage RFIs, coordinate design changes with the builder, verify field conditions, staff quality control roles, and support testing and commissioning
  • Review BAS, UMCS, and SCADA design against federal and DoD controls and cybersecurity standards
  • Check controller selection, network architecture, points lists, and sequences of operation
  • Check that control system designs carry the cybersecurity requirements needed for authorization, working with MC3's RMF team
  • Review open protocol use (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks) and front-end integration
  • Review construction submittals, point-to-point checkout, and performance verification test procedures
  • Review in rolling, over-the-shoulder sessions as the design evolves; turn comments with criteria citations and fixes in 48 to 72 hours, in the client's review system
  • Use MC3-approved, secure AI tools to check designs against criteria, compare submittals to specifications, and draft comments, then verify every result before it goes out
  • Support cybersecurity accreditation: collect system inventories, diagrams, and configuration data, and help scan and harden control and security systems

  • Preferred: Water, wastewater, or power SCADA experience
  • Preferred: Can review across a second discipline (for example, electrical and controls, or telecom and ESS)
  • Preferred: OTA prototype, progressive design-build, or rapid-delivery project experience
  • Helpful but not required: USACE Construction Quality Management (CQM) certificate, NICET, a commissioning certification, or Security+
