Technical Product Manager (Senior / Staff)
Overview
AEP Hawaii is partnering with a venture-backed, high-growth defense technology company that builds AI systems used in national security missions.
This senior/staff-level product role reports to the CTO and owns the shared platform foundations that multiple engineering teams build on.
It is a systems-level role, not a feature-roadmap role: you decide how core platform pieces are structured and make sure the teams adopt them.
The Opportunity
Take on platform problems that cut across several engineering groups and that no single team can solve alone.
Bring consistency to a fast-growing platform by setting clear, lasting technical standards.
Start in close partnership with engineering leadership, then grow into owning cross-team technical decisions on your own.
You will work in areas like access control and permissions, identity and ownership models, data access patterns, and shared platform services.
Responsibilities
Define and evolve shared platform building blocks, turning mission and product needs into clear technical behavior.
Write the documents that make technical intent unambiguous: PRDs, technical specs, and success criteria.
Lead the resolution of architectural problems that span multiple engineering teams.
Align engineering leaders, designers, and mission stakeholders around a shared direction.
Work with Engineering Managers to turn technical direction into execution plans, and keep teams aligned through delivery.
Spot early when teams start building in different directions, and get them back on track.
Surface and resolve cross-team dependencies created by shared platform work.
Qualifications
Experience as a Staff-level Technical Program/Product Manager, product architect, or engineer who moved into product.
Deep systems thinking across distributed systems, identity and access management, or platform architecture.
A track record of setting technical direction across multiple teams.
Proven ability to carry large cross-org technical initiatives to completion: framing tradeoffs, getting buy-in, and locking in decisions that hold.
Earns the trust of senior engineers and technical leaders without relying on formal authority.
Thrives in ambiguity and flags risks early, such as unclear ownership, fuzzy definitions, or weak execution plans.
Bonus: background in platform, infrastructure, or security; experience with policy or permission systems; multi-tenant or regulated environments; orgs with distributed ownership.
